1. FOREWORD
by Barbara Wood

Welcome to the 2002 Brochure of the Society of Flight Test Engineers (European Chapter) SFTE (EC).
I start with the sad news of the death, in 2001, of Wim Dijkshoorn. Wim, one of the founding fathers, was dedicated to Flight Test and was still active in SFTE until his death. You will see his name and picture throughout this volume and a large number of you will remember Wim and his wife, Wapke, at SFTE events. Wim is a great loss to the world. The European Chapter would like to dedicate this issue of the brochure to his name.

I am pleased that it has been possible to continue the tradition of producing a SFTE (EC) brochure biannually. This time it was agreed to take advantage of the medium of CD, thus facilitating more efficient production and distribution.
For those not familiar with the brochure, here are a few words of explanation. It was started primarily to ensure that the rich history of the SFTE (EC) was documented before it became impossible to gather the information from those directly involved in it’s founding and subsequent events.
To make it a little more than a history book, it was decided to include information on Flight Test Centres along with companies who provide equipment and services. Suggestions for future updates are invited.

Activities since the last issue have included a symposium in Delft in 1999 and the annual symposium in Turin in 2000. Both were well-supported, highly successful events.
Planning for the symposium this year in Sweden has also been a strong focus.

Franz Enzinger, a past President of the European Chapter, is to be congratulated on his Directors Award. The SFTE (EC) is proud to have him as a member.

The SFTE (EC) continues to grow and I am grateful to those who have provided ideas for improvements. I hope we have succeeded with some of these by making more information available on the web site. Others ideas have been fed back to headquarters for attention.

The SFTE (EC) Board would like to thank all those who have contributed to the production of this Brochure with special thanks to Sam Storm van Leeuwen and NLR.

Some late news: It is with great pleasure that we congratulate Franz Enzinger on his election as President of SFTE.
